Senglea ( Maltese : L-Isla ) is a peninsula and city in the south-western part of the " Great Port " of Malta . It runs almost parallel to the Vittoriosa (Birgu) peninsula to the east and lies opposite Valletta , on the other side of the port. It is one of the so-called " Three Cities ". Senglea has 2954 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), mostly employees of the nearby shipyards.

history

Before the place was named after the Grand Master of the Order of Malta , Claude de la Sengle , it was called “L-Isla” in common parlance. This term is still very common among Maltese today. In 1554, La Sengle had the fortress of St Michael built here. This fortress, together with Fort St. Elmo and the headquarters of the Knights of Malta at the top of Birgus , the Fortress St. Angelo , played a decisive role in the siege by the Turks in 1565.

After the city was almost completely destroyed by the German and Italian air forces in World War II due to its proximity to the shipyards of Malta (see also Siege of Malta (Second World War) ), it was rebuilt with mostly simple residential buildings.

Attractions

The Basilica of the Nativity of Mary is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin (Ta 'Marija Bambina). It is located in the Diocese of Malta and was founded in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV. raised to the minor basilica.

Only a small observation post (Gardjola) remained from the fortress of St. Michael, with a relief of an eye on one side and an ear on the other, as a hint to the guard to keep eyes and ears open. This also offers a good view of Valletta, the "Great Harbor" and the fortress of St. Angelo.
