Dolores Cristina (born January 10, 1949 in Senglea ) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party and was Minister for Education and Employment until March 10, 2013.

biography

After attending school, she completed a teaching degree at the University of Malta , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1971 . She then worked as a history and English teacher at secondary schools. In addition, she worked as a volunteer for a number of years , including being President of the National Women's Council between 1991 and 1995. In addition, she was a board member of Public Broadcasting Services from 1992 to 1995 and at the same time a member of the commission for the International Year of the Family until 1994. Dolores Cristina was also a member of the Forum against Violence against Women from 1993 to 1994, a member of the Council of the University of Malta from 1994 to 1996, a member of the Commission on Public Financing of Political Parties from 1996 to 1998 and at the same time a member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice.

In 1996, Dolores Cristina applied for the first time, albeit unsuccessfully, as a candidate for the Partit Nazzjonalista (Nationalist Party) in the parliamentary elections. Within the PN party organization, she was President of the Women's Movement (MNPN) between 1997 and 1998 and then President of the Board of Directors of the Partit Nationalista until 2000.

In April 1998 she was elected mayor of Swieqi , a small town in northeastern Malta. She only held this office for just under six months, because in the election in September 1998 she was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives, where she represented constituency 10 . During this time she was among other things chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee. Between February 2002 and April 2003 she was also a substitute member of the Convention on the Future of Europe .

In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2008 , she was re-elected as a member, this time representing constituency 9 . In April 2003 she was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for Social Policy by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami and responsible for social housing and gender equality. As a Catholic , she spoke out in favor of a ban on divorce .

After Fenech Adami's successor as Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi took office on March 23, 2004, she became Minister for Families and Social Solidarity herself. In this department she was responsible for social policy , family policy , children, solidarity services, social security, social housing and equality between men and women .

After the parliamentary elections in Malta in 2008 , she was appointed Minister for Education and Culture by Gonzi as part of the cabinet reshuffle on March 11, 2008 as the successor to Louis Galea . Immediately after taking office, she found herself exposed to a strike by university teachers over collective bargaining. From June 23 to September 29, 2008 she was also a substitute member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .
