Edward Fenech Adami (born February 7, 1934 in Birkirkara ) is a Maltese politician . He was President of Malta from 2004 to 2009 .

Life

Adami is the son of a customs officer. After attending the Jesuit College, he first studied economics at the University of Malta, but then switched to law . In 1959 he opened a practice as a lawyer.

In the early 1960s he joined the Christian Democratic Nationalist Party (PN). The Maltese elected him to parliament as early as 1969. In the following years, Adami held numerous high-ranking party positions, such as chairman of the board of directors and the general council. He was then elected party chairman and replaced Giorgio Borg Olivier in 1977 from his post as chairman of the conservative PN. He was elected Prime Minister in 1987 and re-elected in 1992. In 1996 he lost the election, but was reappointed in 1998. During the years of his time as Prime Minister, Adami made sure that the country's physical infrastructure was revised and improved, legal foundations and business structures were also changed: trade was liberalized, while telecommunications, banks and financial services were deregulated and partially privatized. He campaigned for Malta to apply for membership in the EU in July 1990 . On May 1, 2004, Malta became a full member of the EU with nine other countries.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Adami resigned his position as party leader on February 7, 2004, and that of Prime Minister on March 23. He was succeeded in both offices by Lawrence Gonzi . On April 4, 2004, he was elected to succeed President Guido de Marco . On April 4, 2009 he was replaced by George Abela .

Edward Fenech Adami is married to Mary, née Sciberras, and they have five children: John, Beppe, Michael, Maria and Luigi.
