Anton Buttiġieġ
Anton Buttiġieġ (born February 19, 1912 in Qala on the island of Gozo ; † May 5, 1983 ) was a Maltese politician , writer and President of Malta from 1976 to 1981.
Studies and first professional activities
Buttiġieġ studied law at the University of Malta and graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts . In 1940 he received his doctorate in Laws (LL.D.).
During the Second World War he was a police inspector from 1942 to 1944. He then worked as a lawyer. In addition, he was 1946-1948 court reporter and editorial author of the "Times of Malta". From 1959 to 1970 he was editor of the daily newspaper "The Voice of Malta".
Political career
MP
Buttiġieġ was elected as a member of the Partit Laburista in 1955 in a by-election for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives. He retained this mandate until he resigned in October 1976. As such, he was a member of delegations in London in 1958 and 1964 to draw up a Maltese constitution . From 1967 to 1971 he was a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe and its elected Vice-President for the 1967 to 1968 session.
Deputy Prime Minister
1959 to 1961 Buttiġieġ was president and then from 1962 to 1976 deputy chairman of the Labor Party. When the Maltese Labor Party (MLP) with Dom Mintoff re-established government on June 21, 1971, Buttiġieġ was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
President of the Republic of Malta
On December 27, 1976, he was elected second President of the Republic of Malta to succeed Sir Anthony Mamo . He held this office until the end of his five-year term on December 27, 1981. Albert Hyzler succeeded him as acting president .
writer
Anton Buttiġieġ has also worked as a writer and poet since his student days. He received several awards for his literary work. As a poet, he advocated the use of the Maltese language in particular . On January 26, 1931, he was a founding member of the Association of University Students for the Maltese Language, and since March 20, 1938, a member of the Academy of the Maltese Language. His poems have been translated into several languages. His better-known works include:
