Francis Ebejer
Francis Ebejer (born August 28, 1925 in Dingli , Malta ; † June 10, 1993 in Swieqi , Malta) was a Maltese writer .
Life
Ebejer, one of the most important Maltese writers of the 20th century, was the oldest of seven children. Both parents were teachers and so he grew up in an educated middle class environment. Ebejer studied medicine at the University of Malta from 1942 to 1943 and then worked until 1944 as an English-Italian translator for the 8th Army of the British Armed Forces in Tripolitania. Ebejer followed in his parents' footsteps after the war and became a teacher of the English language. He worked as a teacher in Siġġiewi and Żurrieq until 1977. As a writer, he worked bilingually , he wrote in both English and Maltese .
Ebejer began his literary work with radio plays , television reports and short stories . Some of his short stories were published in New York between 1980 and 1992, while some of his radio and television programs were produced by the BBC .
Later Ebejer also wrote for the theater and set standards in the production and direction of modern Maltese theater. He also emerged as a novelist, with most of his novels being published in New York and London. His works were translated primarily into Italian, but also into Dutch.
Ebejer had been a member of the English PEN center since 1961 . Francis Ebejer was the father of the Maltese artist Damian Ebejer .
Honors
Ebejer received the Malta Literary Award (four times), the Cheney Award for the Best Producer in 1984 , the Phenicia Trophy for Culture in 1982 and 1985 and the Citta de Valletta Prize in 1989. In 1989 he received the Medal d'Honneur de la Ville d'Avignon . He was a member of the Academy of Maltese Writers and an honorary member of the Accademie de Vaucluse (France).
