Paul Xuereb (born July 21, 1923 in Rabat , † September 6, 1994 ) was a Maltese politician and was President of the Republic of Malta from 1987 to 1989.

Studies and professional activities

The son of a teacher and screenwriter served as a gunner in an anti-aircraft unit of the Royal Malta Artillery from 1942 to 1944 during World War II . During this time he received several awards for his bravery. From 1944 to 1946 he worked as an employee in the engineering department of the then British shipyard in Malta. He then studied journalism, political economy and political science at the University of London from 1946 to 1949 . He financed his studies by working as an accountant and later as an employee in the tax office.

After returning to Malta in 1950, he was Managing Director of Fardex Trade Development Company Ltd. for eight years. active. Between 1958 and 1959 he was briefly employed by the Ministry of Education as the rector of a lyceum.

Political career

From 1959 to 1964 Xuereb was literary editor and deputy editor of the organ of the Malta Labor Party (MLP), "The Voice of Malta". Subsequently, in 1964, he became general director of the MLP publishing house. He began his political career as early as 1962 when he ran for the House of Representatives . From February 17, 1962 until his resignation on April 27, 1983 in favor of the future Prime Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi , he remained a member of parliament.

After the MLP re-established government on June 21, 1971 after nine years of opposition, the then Prime Minister and Chairman of the MLP Dom Mintoff appointed him Parliamentary State Secretary in the office of Prime Minister in August 1971. Just two months later, he became Minister for Trade, Industry, Agriculture and Tourism. He also held this office until April 27, 1983. In addition, he was at times Speaker of the House of Representatives.

After retiring from active politics, Xuereb became chairman of several banking companies.

Acting President of Malta

On February 15, 1987, the then Prime Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi appointed him as the successor to Agatha Barbara as incumbent President of the Republic of Malta. He held this office until he was replaced by Censu Tabone on April 4, 1989.

Paul Xuereb published several novels in the Maltese language during his journalistic activity from 1966 to 1971 . In 1986 he received the Maltese Literature Prize for his novel "Meta ...". In addition to other short stories, he also published historical travel guides about Malta.
