from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Myriam Spiteri Debono (* 1952 ) is a Maltese politician for the Malta Labor Party (MLP) and was the first and so far only Speaker of the House .

Life

Mrs Spiteri Debono graduated after school at the Agius de Soldani Girls' School to study law and later as a notary act (Notary Public).

In 1987, 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2003 she applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Malta Labor Party (MLP). At times she was chairwoman of the MLP women's association. In October 1996, however, she succeeded Lawrence Gonzi as Speaker of the House and thus became the first and so far only President of the Maltese Parliament. In October 1998 she was followed by Anton Tabone as Speaker of the House.

In the early parliamentary elections on September 5, 1998, which led to the election of Prime Minister Alfred Sant's government , she received only 38 votes as a candidate for MLP in constituency 1 and thus only the sixth-best result of the MLP candidates in this district. At the same time, she ran for constituency 8 , but also received only 80 votes and the fourth-best result and was thus again not elected as a member of parliament.

After the founding of the press - Ethics -Commission of the Malta Press Club it was in January 1999 the first female president. In this office she was followed in 2001 by the former President of the Supreme Court, Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici.

In the 2003 elections, she received only 40 votes in the 1st constituency and only 58 votes in the 8th constituency, thus failing again as a candidate for a seat in parliament. She only took 67th place on the MLP's electoral list.

In January 2004 she became a member of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality of Men and Women. Most recently, she was appointed as a member of the Officers of the Orders and Members of the Nominations Committee , which is chaired by President George Abela .
