biography

Tabone came from an influential Maltese family. His grandfather Dr. Nicola Tabone and his father Dr. Anton Tabone (1898–1972) were members of parliament. His uncle Ċensu Tabone was also a member of parliament, minister and finally from 1989 to 1994 President of Malta.

After attending school at Gozo Seminary and St. Aloysius College, he was an employee of the National Bank of Malta, now the Bank of Valletta.

He himself began his political career in 1966 when he was first elected as a member of the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) , where he initially represented constituency 10 . In the elections of 1971 , 1976 , 1981 , 1987 , 1992 , 1996 and 2003 he was re-elected as a member of parliament, and from 1976 he represented constituency 13 .

As a Member Tabone was initially only backbenchers (Backbencher), before 1971 the shadow cabinet belonged as Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers and later as Minister for Gozo and the Executive Committee of the PN. In addition, for a few years from 1966 to 1973 he was a member of the now dissolved civil council of Gozo , in which he was also chairman of several committees. Like his father and founder of the civil council, he campaigned for the interests of Gozo, such as the establishment of the Gozo section in the National Archives.

On May 12, 1987, Tabone was appointed first minister for Gozo by Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami and held this post until October 28, 1996 after his re-election in 1992. As minister for Gozo, Malta's second largest island, he promoted the regional aspect of the Island within Malta and campaigned for the island to become a member of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe. In addition, he helped to promote the interests of Gozo and its residents, so that the island is now promoted in both national and European Union politics . After the PN's electoral defeat against the Malta Labor Party , he was reappointed shadow minister for Gozo in 1996.

In October 1998 he succeeded Myriam Spiteri Debono as Speaker of the House and, at almost 10 years, had the longest term of office of any previous speaker. On May 10, 2008, Louis Galea followed him as Speaker of the House. As Speaker of Parliament, he promoted the Maltese initiative to found a Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the establishment of its secretariat in Malta. He also successfully enforced the parliamentary integration of Malta after Malta's accession to the European Union in 2004.

In the parliamentary elections in 2008 he ran again as well as his son Robert Tabone for the first time as a member of the parliament, although both were unsuccessful.

In December 2008, President Edward Fenech Adami awarded him the National Order of Merit for his services .
