Kalcidon Agius

Kalcidon Agius (born October 19, 1917 in Naxxar , † May 24, 2006 ) was a Maltese writer , playwright , politician of the Malta Labor Party (MLP) and speaker of the House of Representatives (Speaker of the House) .

Political career

Agius began his political career in the 1953 election in which he was elected as a candidate for the Malta Labor Party as a Member of Parliament, where he represented the interests of constituency 7 . In the elections in 1955 , 1962 , 1966 and 1971 he was re-elected as a member of parliament.

In January 1978 he succeeded Nestu Laiviera as Speaker of the House . In February 1982 Daniel Micallef followed him as Speaker of the House. During his tenure, he was twice temporarily President of the Republic of Malta. In addition, in his capacity as parliamentary speaker in 1979 was head of delegations of the House of Representatives on official visits to the People's Republic of China and Romania .

After his resignation as speaker of parliament, he was a judicial commissioner (Commissioner of Justice) between 1982 and 1984.

Writer and Awards

In addition to his political career, Agius was also a prolific playwright and writer , whose plays were frequently broadcast on radio and television programs on Xandir Malta. His most famous works include:

For his services to Maltese politics and culture he was knighted (Companion) of the National Order of Merit (KOM) in 1996 .

In addition to him, the House of Representatives also paid tribute to two other Speakers of the House who died in 2006: Joseph M. Baldacchino and Jimmy Farrugia .
