Daniel Micallef

Daniel Micallef (born June 8, 1928 in Rabat ) is a Maltese diplomat , politician of the Malta Labor Party (MLP) and was Speaker of the House .

Life

After attending school, he graduated in medicine and was after the promotion of medicine to the doctor worked as a doctor.

As early as 1962, he was wooed by several parties to run for membership. Micallef began his political career in the 1962 election when he was elected constituency 9 MP by Toni Pellegrino as a representative of Christian's Workers Party. However, he resigned as a member of parliament during the legislative period that ran until 1966.

In the 1971 election he was elected as a candidate for the Malta Labor Party as Member of Parliament, where he initially again represented the interests of constituency 9 . In the elections in 1976 , 1981 and 1987 he was re-elected as a member of parliament, where he represented constituency 11 until 1992 .

He was also a substitute member of Malta in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe between October 1971 and October 1975 and again from May 1981 to April 1982 . There he represented his home country from September 25, 1985 to October 1, 1986 as a full member. At times he was also Vice-President of the European Assembly.

In February 1982, he was appointed as successor to Kalcidon Agius to Speaker of the House (Speaker of the House) selected. In July 1986 he was followed by Paul Xuereb as Speaker of the House.

After leaving Parliament, he was Minister for Education and the Environment in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi from July 1986 to May 1987 .

Micallef was later ambassador to the Holy See between 1997 and 1999 and as such took part in 1997 as a representative of Malta in the 2nd World Family Day of the Catholic Church in Rio de Janeiro , opened by Pope John Paul II .

In addition, he campaigned for the implementation of medical aid projects in Albania .

When the Labor Party, after the resignation of the chairman Alfred Sant , due to the narrow election defeat in the 2008 parliamentary elections next George Abela , Evarist Bartolo, Michael Falzon and Joseph Muscat competed for his successor as party leader, supported Micallef next to the former long-time health minister Vincent Moran the only candidate, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.
