Nestu Laiviera
Nestu Laiviera (* 1908 ; † 1984 ) was a Maltese politician of the Malta Labor Party (MLP) and Speaker of the House .
biography
Laiviera began his political career in the 1947 election in which he was elected as a candidate for the Malta Labor Party as a Member of Parliament, where he represented the interests of constituency 2 . In the elections in 1950 , 1951 , 1953 , 1955 , 1962 , 1966 and 1971 he was re-elected as a member of parliament.
From December 1955 to April 1958 he was the first Speaker of Parliament during the self-government period in the United Kingdom .
In September 1976 he was elected as the successor to Emmanuel Attard Bezzina as Speaker of the House . In January 1978 he was succeeded by Kalcidon Agius as Speaker of the House.
The Triq Nestu Laiviera (N. Laiviera Street) in Vittoriosa (Birgu) was named in his honor.
