Alfred Bonnici

Alfred Bonnici (born June 6, 1934 ) is a Maltese medical doctor , politician of the Nationalist Party and was Speaker of the House .

biography

Professional career and promotion to speaker of parliament

After attending school, Bonnici first studied pharmacy , which he completed with a Bachelor in Pharmacy (B.Pharm.), And then studied medicine . After graduation as a doctor of medicine, he was the personal physician of the chairman of the Nationalist Party and Prime Minister Ġorġ Borg Olivier , with whom he remained on friendly terms until his death 1980th

His political career began in 1962 with the election as the youngest member of the House of Representatives , where, after re-elections in 1966 and 1971 to 1976, he represented the interests of the Nationalist Party in constituency 4 and then in constituency 3 . In 1964 he was one of the six MPs of the Nationalist Party who voted against the post-independence republican constitution proposed by the leader of the Malta Labor Party , Dom Mintoff .

In April 1966 he was elected to succeed Paolo Pace as Speaker of the House and held this office until he was replaced by Emmanuel Attard Bezzina in June 1971.

In addition, he was from May 3, 1965 to May 1, 1966 and between May 3, 1976 and January 1, 1976 representative of Malta in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

In 1976 he decided not to run again for election to the House of Representatives. The reason he later gave the power struggle for the chairmanship of the Nationalist Party, which Edward Fenech Adami was ultimately able to win after George Borg Olivier resigned from this post in 1976 for health reasons.

Functions after leaving politics and awards

After leaving politics, he resumed his work as a doctor and became a respected specialist in aviation medicine and an expert in aviation medicine . As such, he was also Vice President of the European Organization in Aviation Medicine. He is also Honorary President of the Association of Aviation Medical Experts (THE ASSOCIATION OF AVIATION MEDICAL EXAMINERS). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM), the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (FRSH) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS).

He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council for the Elderly of the Department of Social Affairs for some time. As a recognized expert in Maltese history and in his position as chairman of the Society for Philately , he was also a member of the STAMP DESIGN ADVISORY BOARD of the Maltese government.

For his services he was awarded the Order of Malta (Knight of Malta). In 1996, along with a number of other politicians, he received the commemorative medal for the 75th anniversary of the Maltese self-government.
