Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi (politician, 1933)

Carmelo Mifsud Bonniċi (born July 17, 1933 in Cospicua ) is a Maltese politician and former Prime Minister .

Life

After studying law and the promotion of Doctor of Law , he worked from 1968 as a lecturer in business and tax law at the University of Malta as well as the legal advisor to the Federation of Trade Unions.

In 1980 "Karmenu" Mifsud Bonniċi was elected deputy chairman of the Maltese Malta Labor Party (MLP) and appointed successor to the then chairman and prime minister Dom Mintoff .

Due to the resignation of a member of the government, he was co-opted into parliament on May 2, 1982. In addition, he was first Minister of Labor and Social Services and on September 5, 1983, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education.

On December 22, 1984, he succeeded Mintoff as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Labor Party. During his reign, Mifsud Bonnici maintained the political course of his predecessor. In particular, he maintained the adamant attitude towards the opposition Nationalist Party. On the other hand, he campaigned for private commercial and industrial settlements and tried to improve Maltese relations with Western Europe , the USA and the British Commonwealth . At the same time, he maintained Malta's strong ties with communist states and even strengthened ties with Libya .

In 1987 the Labor Party lost the parliamentary elections against the Nationalist Party, so that Mifsud Bonniċi was replaced as Prime Minister on May 12, 1987 by Edward Fenech Adami .

Mifsud Bonniċi was replaced in 1992 as chairman of the Labor Party and opposition leader by Alfred Sant . In 1996 he did not run for a seat in parliament again.
