Robert Abela (born December 7, 1977 in Sliema ) is a Maltese lawyer and politician . On January 11, 2020, he was elected as the new chairman of his party, the ruling social democratic Partit Laburista . According to Maltese custom, leaders of the ruling party become Prime Minister of Malta . He was sworn in on January 13, 2020.

Life

Robert Abela is the son of the former President of Malta, George Abela . He grew up in Tarxien .

After the primary school of the nuns of Santa Luċija and later the School of St. Francis in Cospicua , he first entered the Catholic St. Aloysius College in Birkirkara . He then studied law at the University of Malta and received his doctorate in 2002. In 2003 he was admitted to the bar. He runs a law firm with his father.

Abela has been a member of the Partit Laburista since 1996 . Abela was elected to the House of Representatives in June 2017 . There he was a member of the Audit Committee and Chairman of the Committee on Public Offices.

On January 11, 2020, Abela was elected as the new chairman of the Partit Laburista.

As Prime Minister, he has headed Abela's cabinet since January 13, 2020 .

In April 2020 it was announced that he was being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the arrival of a refugee boat.

Private

Robert Abela's sister Maria Abela Manconi is a soprano. His wife Lydia, with whom he has been married since 2008, is a lawyer and executive secretary of the Partit Laburista. The couple have a daughter.
