Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš (born December 13, 1964 in Wilmington , Delaware , USA ) is a Latvian politician of the Vienotība party and Prime Minister of Latvia since January 23, 2019 .

Life

Krišjānis Kariņš comes from a family of Latvian origin. He earned a Bachelor of Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 , where he received his PhD in the same subject in 1996. From 1994 to 2002 he was managing director of a company.

Political career

In 2002 he founded the Jaunais laiks party , for which he moved to the Saeima that same year . From 2004 to 2006 he was Latvian Minister of Economic Affairs. At Jaunais Laiks he was a member of the board from 2003 to 2007, party chairman from 2007 to 2008 and from 2008 a member of the board again. Before and after his time as minister, he was group leader of the Jaunais laiks in parliament.

He was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 and 2014 (for the Vienotība founded in 2011 from the merger of the Jaunais laiks with other parties ) . There he was a member of the EPP parliamentary group and was a member of its executive committee. In January 2019, Aleksejs Loskutovs succeeded him as a member of the 8th European Parliament .

In the lengthy coalition talks after the parliamentary elections in Latvia in 2018 , Kariņš was able to prevail as a compromise candidate, although his party is the smallest parliamentary group with only eight seats in the 13th Saeima . On January 23, 2019, he and his cabinet made up of five conservative and liberal parties ( KPV LV , JKP , AP , NA and Vienotība) were confirmed by parliament. The new Prime Minister believes that one of his main tasks is to restore confidence in the Latvian banking system. He also stressed that he wanted to tackle the problem of money laundering.
