Saulius Skvernelis (born July 23, 1970 in Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR ) is a Lithuanian administrative lawyer and politician . Since December 13, 2016 he has been Prime Minister of Lithuania and Head of the Cabinet of Ministers . Before that he was Minister of the Interior (2014-2016) and Police Commissioner General .

Life

Skvernelis grew up not far from the Polish border; therefore, like other Lithuanian border residents, he also learned the Polish language .

Education and career

From 1977 he attended the school in Kapsukas in what was then the Lithuanian SSR . After graduating from high school with a silver medal at Jonas Jablonskis Middle School in Marijampolė , he studied physics for two semesters at Vilnius University from 1989 to 1990 . From 1990 to 1994 Skvernelis completed a degree in automotive engineering at the Technical University in Vilnius . In 2005 he obtained a master's degree in administrative law from Mykolas Romeris University .

From 1994 to 1998 he was assistant to the Chair of Police Law and Professional Tactics at Mykolas Romeris University . From 1998 to 1999 he was the Police Commissioner Inspector in Trakai and later held several senior positions. From April 2008 to 2011 he was Deputy Police Commissioner General of Lithuania . From February 2011 to November 2014, he was the Lithuanian Police Commissioner General.

From November 2014 to April 2016 he was Minister of the Interior in the Butkevičius cabinet .

In the parliamentary elections in October 2016 , Skvernelis ran as the top candidate of the LVŽS (Union of Farmers and Greens) party. The LVŽS received a surprising 21.5 percent of the votes and came up with 54 of 141 seats (2012: 3.9 percent; one seat). Skvernelis has been a Seimas member since November 14, 2016 . On November 22, 2016, he was elected Prime Minister of Lithuania by the Lithuanian parliament (90 out of 127 parliamentarians voted for him) and charged with forming a government . Since December 13, 2016, he has headed the government of Lithuania . After Skvernelis failed to make it into the runoff election in the presidential election in May 2019 , he announced his eventual resignation on July 2, 2019. He later postponed the decision to July 12, when Gitanas Nausėda took office.

Family and private

His father was a locksmith and his mother worked at home. Skvernelis himself is married for the second time. He has been married to his wife Silvija Skvernelienė (* 1978 as Kirdonytė in Marijampolė ), a financier, since 2006 and has their daughter Eglė (* 2009) and son Tadas (* 2016).

In August 2019, Skvernelis announced that he had level I lymphatic cancer . He then underwent chemotherapy and hopes for a complete cure since the disease has not spread.

Skvernelis lives in the village of Smigliai , in the district of Zujūnai in the district of Vilnius , 4.5 km west of the Vilnius district of Lazdynai . His hobbies are sports, history and gardening.

Political positions

Skvernelis says he wants to take action against social injustice, continue the pro-Western course of EU and NATO member Lithuania and increase defense spending. He announced measures against poverty and alcoholism as well as against the high rate of emigration. The emigration of large numbers of Lithuanians, especially to Great Britain, has emerged as a problem in recent years. The population shrank from 3.5 million in 2001 to 2.9 million in 2015.
