Algirdas Monkevičius

Algirdas Monkevičius (born March 29, 1956 in Rietavas ) is a Lithuanian educator, politician , Minister of Education of Lithuania (2000-2004, since 2019).

Life

After graduating from secondary school in Rietavas in 1974, Monkevičius graduated in 1979 from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the Pedagogical Institute in Šiauliai and became a teacher. From 1988 to 1991 he studied as an aspirant at the Center for Sociological Research in Moscow and obtained his doctorate in sociology on personality awareness in 1991 . From 1996 to 1999 he completed distance learning at Šiaulių universitetas and became a computer science teacher .

From 1979 to 1981 Monkevičius worked in Naujoji Akmenė , from 1991 to 1997 he was the director of the Papilė Middle School . From 1998 to 2000 he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences , from 1999 to 2000 Head of the Chair of Management and 2000 Dean of the Faculty in Šiauliai.

From 2000 to 2008 was MONKEVICIUS member of the Seimas , elected in constituency Akmenė - Joniškis . No. 39. From 2000 to 2004 and 2008 he was Lithuanian Minister of Education in the Cabinet Kirkilas , Cabinet Paksas II (2000-2001) and in the Cabinet Brazauskas I (2001- 2004). From 2010 Monkevičius was Dean of the Faculty of Politics and Management and from April 28, 2015 to December 2018, Rector of the Mykolo Romerio universitetas . He has been Minister for Education, Science and Sport in the Skvernelis Cabinet since 2019 .

Monkevičius was a member of the CPSU and from 2000 of Naujoji sąjunga . From 1997 to 2003 was a member of the council of the district municipality Akmenė ( Lietuvių tautininkų sąjunga ).

Monkevičius is married. His wife is Jovita Monkevičienė. They have the daughter Audronė and the sons Tadas and Algirdas.
