The  Mykolas Romeris University  (MRU; Lithuanian Mykolo Romerio universitetas ) is a state university based in the Lithuanian capital  Vilnius . It is one of the largest universities in the country.

Around 10,000 students from 38 countries are enrolled at the MRU . The faculties are located in Vilnius and Kaunas . Bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs in the field of social sciences are offered in English.

The MRU is active in various international university organizations such as the European Universities Association  (EUA) and the International Association of Universities  (IAU). There are international partnerships with over 300 universities, public and private institutes. The MRU Asian Center , the Francophone Studies Center and the King Sejong Institute organize events, conferences and lectures. International relations are promoted through visits and lectures by researchers, embassy officials and well-known university representatives.

In 2015 almost 900 research papers were published and more than 50 scientific events were organized.

In 2015 the Social Innovations Laboratory Center - MRU LAB with 19 laboratories was opened on campus. The Research and Innovations Aide Center is also located in the new laboratory building

history

Originally, the MRU was a faculty of the  Minsk Militia School  . The department of the Belarusian school has been reorganized several times. The university had changing names:

  •  Police Academy of Lithuania,  Lietuvos policijos akademija  (1990–1997)
  •  Law Academy of Lithuania,  Lietuvos teisės akademija  (1997–2000)
  •  Law University of Lithuania,  Lietuvos teisės universitetas  (2000–2004).

In 2004 the university was given its current name. It was named after  Mykolas Römeris , a well-known Lithuanian legal scholar, judge and lawyer.

structure

The university was founded by the Parliament of Lithuania (Seimas). The governing body consists of the University Council, University Senate and University Rector. There are four faculties and four institutes. 70 programs are offered at bachelor, master and doctoral level. The studies are carried out in accordance with the main principles of the Bologna Process. The focus is on communication, economics, finance, history, management, computer science, law, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, public administration, public security, social work and sociology.

Education

For international students, Bachelor, Master and PHD courses are offered in English.

  • MRU is the first university in Lithuania to offer the possibility of international study programs leading to double or triple degrees. There are collaborations with universities from Great Britain, France, Austria, Finland and South Korea.
  • Around 500 students take part in international exchange programs (Erasmus, Nordplus or other international programs).
  • International students attending the MRU programs come from over 25 countries (e.g. USA, Jamaica, Germany, Ukraine, Turkey, Azerbaijan, India).
  • The range of courses is continuously renewed to meet the needs of society and to offer young people the skills and knowledge they need for a successful career.
  • A Lithuanian diploma is recognized in all countries that have signed the Lisbon Convention.
  • In 2010 the Diploma Supplement Label of the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO / CEPER was awarded to MRU.
  • In 2012, MRU was awarded the ECTS label . This label guarantees transparency and reliability in European and international cooperation (only 64 institutions in Europe and only 2 in Lithuania). It is one of the most important characteristics for a high quality study.

Mykolas Romeris University is engaged in basic and applied research. She also takes part in regional, national and international research projects. The research carried out in the faculties, departments, laboratories, institutes and centers of the university creates a link between research and study. The university has traditionally been engaged in research in the social sciences, but recently research has also been carried out in the fields of biomedicine, technology and the humanities. 

internationalization

The international cooperation is intended to strengthen the internationalization of studies and research. The Joint Study Programs were created in collaboration with other institutes. Students, academic and administrative staff take part in international exchange programs, conferences and other events. Mykolas Romeris University has international relations all over the world. There are connections with more than 400 academic and government institutions. Since 2006 the university has offered Joint Master Degree programs, encouraging students to earn double or triple degrees. One of the goals of internationalization is to create a large number of study programs. Lithuanian and international students share their experiences and ideas on joint projects. This way they get to know other worldviews and build up a cultural awareness.

The central campus of MRU is located in the northern part of Vilnius (Baltupiai) and is surrounded by a park.

  • The campus is easily accessible by public transport from anywhere in Vilnius. It takes about 25 minutes from the city center.
  • International students can get a triple or double room in the university dormitory. The student residence is a 5-minute walk from the campus.
  • There is a canteen on campus where you can get lunch.
  • The university library is open all day.
  • Other free additional services are a parking lot, sports halls, fitness studio, outdoor sports equipment, wireless internet, cultural & educational activities, language courses, etc.

Sports

The Mykolas Romeris University offers training opportunities. An active lifestyle is promoted through organized activities and individual health promotion. New gyms for gymnastics, games and table tennis were built.

  • MRU was a partner of EuroBasket 2011 and 8 of the top teams were from MRU
  • MRU has long promoted Olympic sportsmanship and in recognition of this, on December 1, 2010 the Rector of Mykolas University Romeris, Alvydas Pumputis, was awarded the LNOCs Medal of Honor by the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee (LNOC) . Artūras Poviliūnas, President of the LNOC, said that MRU offers the best study conditions for the agreement between sport and study 

Olympic medalists

  • 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro: MRU students Mindaugas Griškonis and Saulius Ritter won a silver medal in rowing - double sculls (men).
  • Olympic Summer Games 2012 in London: MRU graduate Laura Asadauskaitė-Zadneprovskienė won a gold medal in modern pentathlon and MRU student Jevgenij Šuklin won silver in Canadier-One men 200 m.
  • 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing: MRU students Edvinas Krungolcas and Andrejus Zadneprovskis won silver and bronze in the modern pentathlon.
  • 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens: MRU student Andrejus Zadneprovskis won silver in the modern pentathlon.

Other athletes

  • MRU student Giedrius Titenis, a two-time Olympic swimmer, won a bronze medal in the 2009 World Aquatics Championship.
  • MRU student Andrej Olijnik took part in the 2016 Olympic Games and won a silver medal in the 2011 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.
