The Vilnius Art Academy ( lit .: Vilniaus dailės akademija), based in Vilnius, is the most important art school in Lithuania , a university college. The head office is located in the old town of Vilnius .

history

The Art Academy traces its foundation back to the Vilnius University's architecture faculty , which opened in 1793 . By 1832 , departments for the entire spectrum of the visual arts were gradually built up: painting and drawing (1797), sculpture and art history (1803), engraving and graphics (1805).

In 1940 the academy was spun off from the university. Closed during the German occupation of Lithuania, it was reopened in 1944. The Vilnius Art Academy played and continues to play an important role in the preservation of monuments in Lithuania.
