Juozas Balčikonis
Juozas Balčikonis (born March 24, 1885 in Ėriškiai , Panevėžys Rajongemeinde ; † February 5, 1969 in Vilnius , Lithuanian SSR ) was a Lithuanian linguist and translator.
Life
Balčikonis grew up in a peasant family and was the oldest. He attended the Ramygala elementary school and from 1898 the Panevėžys secondary school . Here he became interested in the Lithuanian language and read forbidden literature. From 1906 he studied at the suggestion of Jonas Jablonskis Philology at the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Petersburg . After acquaintance with Kazimieras Būga, he immersed himself in the problems of Lithuanian.
From 1918 to 1920 he was the director of the Panevėžys grammar school and from 1920 to 1924 of the Panevėžys teachers' college. From 1924 to 1940 he lived in Kaunas . From 1924 to 1931 he taught at Kaunas University and from 1944 to 1960 at Vilnius University ; from 1944 to 1950 headed the chair for Lithuanian language. From 1944 he was a professor. He also translated literature from various languages into Lithuanian, e. B. by Jules Verne , Hans Christian Andersen Wilhelm Hauff and the Brothers Grimm .
A grammar school was renamed Panevėžys after him .
