history

The Kaunas Art Faculty follows the tradition of the Kaunas Art School, which opened in 1922. In 1939 Kauno meno mokykla got the status of an art college (English Kaunas High School of Fine Arts ). Due to the Lithuanian law on art schools (dated May 15, 1940), the Kaunas Art School was divided into two separate art schools in Kaunas and Vilnius. In 1951 the Kaunas and Vilnius Art Institutes were merged to form a State Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR (lit. LTSR valstybinis dailės institutas ). In 1959 the Kaunas Department of Applied Arts was established. In 1983 it became an industrial arts faculty and in 1991 it became a department of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts; since 1992 it has been a separate legal faculty (a legal entity ).
