Linas Antanas Linkevičius (born January 6, 1961 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian social democratic politician , Foreign Minister of Lithuania since 2012 , former Minister of Defense and diplomat , Ambassador .

Life

From 1978 to 1983, Linas Linkevičius completed his degree in electrical engineering at the Kaunas Polytechnic . He was KP - Komsomol - District Secretary of the Kaunas district of Panemunė , head of the Central Committee and a publicist of the daily newspaper " Komjaunimo tiesa " (Lithuanian version of Komsomolskaya Pravda ). He was actively involved in creating opportunities to repatriate the bodies of Lithuanian displaced persons from Siberia .

On February 9, 1992 he became the Council President of the Lithuanian Labor Youth Union ( Lietuvos leiboristų jaunimo unija) . From 1990 he was a correspondent for the daily newspaper “Tiesa” (the Lithuanian version of Pravda ) (1992–1993 employee) and advisor to the LDDP parliamentary group. From November 24, 1992 to November 22, 1996 Linas Linkevičius was a member of the Seimas and headed the Lithuanian parliamentary delegation to NATO. On October 9, 1997, he became the Lithuanian ambassador to NATO . From 1996 to 2004 he was - intermittently - Lithuanian Defense Minister . In 2012 he was the Lithuanian ambassador to Belarus . He has been Lithuania's Foreign Minister since December 2012 . He was a member of the Butkevičius cabinet and has been a member of the Skvernelis cabinet since 2016 (the oldest minister since May 2018) . He held a leading position in the Lithuanian EU Council Presidency in 2013 .

Linas Linkevičius was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania from 2004 until he resigned in September 2017 due to anger over his party's departure from the ruling coalition.

With the help of the Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Antanas Linkevičius, who was "friends" with Netanyahu , the meeting of EU foreign ministers came about, in which Netanyahu took part. It was the first time in 22 years that an Israeli prime minister again visited the EU. Linkevičius acted as a "door opener" and stated that the EU should play a more active role in the Middle East conflict. Linkevičius said: "But that is impossible without direct contact."
