Tomáš Petříček (born September 27, 1981 in Rokycany ) is a Czech politician. He has been Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic since October 2018.

Life

Petříček studied at the Social Science Faculty of Charles University in Prague with stays abroad at the Université libre de Bruxelles and the University of Warwick and received his doctorate in 2014 in International Relations .

Petříček has been a member of the social democratic ČSSD since 2005 . From 2007 to 2009 he was assistant to MEP Libor Rouček . From 2010 to 2013 he worked in the Prague city administration in the field of European politics. In 2014 he became assistant to MEP Miroslav Poche , and in 2017 deputy to Minister of Social Affairs Michaela Marksová .

Since President Miloš Zeman rejected the appointment of the ČSSD proposed Poche as Foreign Minister of the Andrej Babiš II government, ČSSD chairman Jan Hamáček took over the office temporarily. Petříček became Hamáček's deputy and was sworn in as the new Foreign Minister on October 16, 2018. Petříček is a supporter of the Czech Republic's membership in the European Union and NATO and has announced that he will work for the country to play an active role in these institutions.
