Jan Kohout

Jan Kohout (born March 29, 1961 in Pilsen ) is a Czech diplomat and politician . He was twice foreign minister of the Czech Republic .

Life

Kohout studied at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University and graduated in 1984. He was a member of the Communist Party from 1986 to 1989 . He is now a member of the Social Democratic Party (ČSSD). From 2002 to 2004, Kohout served as first deputy foreign minister. From 2004 to 2008 he was the Czech ambassador to the EU in Brussels and then took over the post of first deputy to Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg . From May 8, 2009 to July 13, 2010, Kohout was the non-party foreign minister in the Jan Fischer government, and from May 9 to June 30, 2009, he also assumed the presidency of the Councilin the General Affairs Council . From July 10, 2013 to January 29, 2014 he was again Foreign Minister in the Jiří Rusnok government .

In 2005, Kohout was briefly under discussion as the successor to the resigned Prime Minister Stanislav Gross . Ultimately, however, the Social Democrats preferred Jiří Paroubek for this office .

On June 16, 2016, Kohout was awarded the Order of the Oak Crown .

Kohout is divorced with a son and a daughter.
