Martin Stropnický (born December 19, 1956 in Prague ) is a Czech actor , diplomat and politician of the ANO 2011 . From December 2017 to June 2018 he was Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic.

Life

Stropnický spent his childhood in Italy and Turkey, among others . After graduating from high school in Prague , he studied at the theater faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague from 1976 to 1980 and then accepted an engagement at the Prague Municipal Theater. From 1986 onwards he worked at the Divadlo na Vinohradech (Theater in the Vineyards) in Prague .

After the Velvet Revolution , Stropnický entered the diplomatic service of the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry. From 1993 to 1994 he was the Czech ambassador to Portugal , from 1997 to 1998 to Italy . In the interim government appointed in 1998 under Prime Minister Josef Tošovský , Stropnický held the office of the Czech Minister of Culture. Stropnický was then sent to the Holy See as an ambassador until 2002 .

Stropnický then returned to his original profession as an actor and director and also worked as a commentator for the daily Mladá fronta Dnes . In the early parliamentary elections in 2013 , Stropnický was elected to the Czech Parliament for the ANO party in 2011 .

In the Bohuslav Sobotka government sworn in on January 29, 2014 , Stropnický took over the defense department. On December 13, 2017, he became Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Andrej Babiš I government . After failing to pass the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives, the government left office on June 27, 2018. Stropnický was no longer available for a new government.

Stropnický was married twice to his first wife, Lucie, and the relationship resulted in three children. His son Matěj Stropnický (* 1983) is also an actor and politician for the Green Party . Martin Stropnický later married the actress Veronika Žilková , with whom he has a daughter. A second child died shortly after birth.
