Vlastimil Picek

Vlastimil Picek (born October 25, 1956 in Turnov ) is a Czech officer with the rank of general . On October 28, 2009 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic . From March 2013 to January 2014 he was Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic.

Life

Picek attended the University of Defense in Vyškov (Vysoká vojenská škola pozemního vojska ve Vyškově), which he graduated in 1981. In 1993 he began postgraduate studies at the Czech Technical University in Prague .

Picek, born in Turnov, is currently non-party, but was a member of KSČ from 1977 to 1990, according to his own statements for career reasons .

He is divorced and has two sons.

Military career

With the beginning of his postgraduate his appointment was made chief of the Signal Corps of the command IV. Air defense corps in Stara Boleslav before it a year later Department Head in the staff department Telecommunications was on the General Staff. From 1996 to 2001 he was head of the telecommunications group in the general staff as well as head of the operational-tactical command systems department and chief department head of management in the general staff.

After several years as Director of Security in the Ministry of Defense and Head of the President's Military Chancellery, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic in 2009. In October 2011, Picek announced that he would be leaving the service next year. On July 1, 2012, Petr Pavel was appointed as his successor as Chief of the General Staff.

Political career

After serving as Deputy Defense Minister under Alexandr Vondra for some time , he was dismissed from office in December 2012 by the then newly appointed Defense Minister Karolína Peake . This step led Prime Minister Petr Nečas to depose Peake after only eight days in office, temporarily serving as defense minister himself and again installing Picek as deputy. Against the will of the leader of the coalition party LIDEM , Karolína Peake, Picek was appointed the new Defense Minister of the Czech Republic by President Miloš Zeman on March 19, 2013 at the request of Prime Minister Nečas . As the only incumbent minister, Picek remained in office in the subsequent interim government of Jiří Rusnok even after Nečas' resignation on June 17, 2013 , but was replaced by Martin Stropnický as defense minister in early 2014 when the Sobotka government took office after the early parliamentary elections .

In the local elections in October 2014, Picek was elected for a local group of voters in the representative assembly of the twin cities of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav and was then elected mayor of the city by the city representatives.
