Petr Pavel

Petr Pavel (born November 1, 1961 in Planá u Mariánských Lázní ) is an officer in the Czech Army and was Chief of the General Staff there until May 2015. He was promoted to lieutenant general on May 8, 2012, and to general ( Armádní generál ) exactly two years later. From June 2015 to June 2018 General Pavel was the chairman of the NATO Military Committee .

biography

From 1979 to 1983 Pavel attended the Army College in Vyškov ( Vysoká vojenská škola pozemního vojska ve Vyškově ). He also completed training at the Staff College in Camberley (1995–1996) and at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London (2005).

Petr Pavel was a member of a specialist commission that in 2011 prepared the Czech “ White Paper on Defense”.

He is married and has a daughter and two sons.

Military career

Pavel began his career as the leader of a reconnaissance platoon . After a few years he switched to the intelligence service , where he was in command of the 601st Special Forces Group from November 1, 1997 to March 31, 1999 .

From 2003 to 2005, Pavel was Deputy Commander in Chief of the Czech Armed Forces and then until 2007 head of the operational department , the main staff department for the development of the armed forces . On July 1, 2011 he was appointed Deputy Chief and on July 1, 2012 Chief of the General Staff . He thus succeeded Vlastimil Picek .

In addition, he went through several assignments abroad. From 1992 to 1993 he worked for UNPROFOR in the Republic of Serbian Krajina . There succeeded to under his command paratroopers a French unit , as a result of a Croatian offensive was caught in a hopeless situation, to out of danger as part of a week-long action evacuate . For this he was awarded the Military Merit Cross with a bronze star by Defense Minister Pierre Joxe . Between 1993 and 1994 he was the deputy of the Czech military and air force attaché in Belgium . From 1999 to 2002 he was a liaison officer at the AFCENT headquarters and deputy commander of the AFNORTH regional command that emerged from AFCENT . From 2007 to 2009 he was Deputy Military Representative of the Czech Republic in the EU and from 2010 to 2011 he represented his country at SHAPE .

Since June 25, 2015, General Pavel was the 31st chairman of the NATO Military Committee . His term of office extended from 2015 to 2018. His successor as Chief of the Czech General Staff was Josef Bečvář in May 2015 .
