Karel Kühnl (born September 12, 1954 in Prague ) is a Czech politician and diplomat. He was party leader of the liberal Unie svobody (US) and a minister in several governments.

Life

From 1973 to 1978 Kühnl studied law at the Faculty of Law at Charles University . In 1980 he emigrated for political reasons and lived in Vienna and Munich . In exile, Künhl worked for Radio Free Europe .

After returning to Prague, Kühnl worked from 1991 to 1993 as a consultant for members of the government and as an external assistant to the law faculty. In 1992 he was appointed Chairman of the Council of Czech Television . From 1993 to 1997 he was ambassador to London . On June 3, 1997 Kühnl was appointed Minister for Industry and Trade in the Klaus II government for ODA . He kept this office in the Tošovský interim government . After the House of Representatives elections in 1998 , Kühnl moved into the House of Representatives for the US and was his party's club chairman until 2004. 2000–2001 Kühnl was party chairman.

From 2004 to 2006 Kühnl was Minister of Defense in the Gross and Paroubek governments . In 2006 Kühnl lost his mandate. From 2007 to 2013 he was the Czech ambassador in Zagreb .
