Karolína Peake (2010)

Karolína Peake (born October 10, 1975 in Prague ) is a Czech politician ( LIDEM ). In the Nečas government , she was initially responsible for the fight against corruption as Deputy Prime Minister. She was appointed Minister of Defense on December 12, 2012, but was dismissed on December 20, 2012.

Life

After studying law at Charles University , Peake worked for a law firm for two years. She later worked as a lawyer and translator.

From 1997 to 1998 Karolína Peake was a member of the ODS party , but did not appear politically. From 2006 to 2010 she was a member of the representation of the 1st district of Prague for the party Věci veřejné (VV). In 2007 she became a full member of the party. In 2010 she successfully ran for the Czech Chamber of Deputies, of which she has been a member since then. In April 2011, after the party leader Kristýna Kočí was expelled from the party, she briefly assumed the position of chairman of the VV in the Chamber of Deputies. She then joined the Petr Nečas government on July 1, 2011, as Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for combating corruption .

Following the conviction of VV parliamentary group leader Vít Bárta for bribery of members of parliament, there was an intense dispute within the VV in April 2012 about remaining in the government. Karolína Peake always advocated remaining in government. In the course of the conflict, she resigned from the VV with the other incumbent ministers of the VV and a number of other members of parliament, thus initially ensuring that she would remain in the government. In May 2012 she announced the founding of her own party called LIDEM - liberální democé . At the founding party convention of LIDEM on November 3, 2012 in Brno , Peake was elected chairman with 68 out of 70 votes. On August 8, 2013, she resigned from the chair after she did not vote against the government in the vote of confidence of the Jiří Rusnok government, but did not take part in the vote.

After Alexandr Vondra's resignation , on December 12, 2012, she took on the position of Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic instead of being responsible for fighting corruption. She remained deputy head of government. After only eight days in office, President Václav Klaus dismissed her from this position at the instigation of Prime Minister Petr Nečas because of a dispute over personnel policy in the ministry, which triggered another government crisis. Nečas justified his move with a "total loss of confidence" in view of the dismissal of the first Deputy Defense Minister Vlastimil Picek on her first day in office , which was ordered by Peake .

Karolína Peake is married to the Australian Charles Peake, with whom she has two sons. The family lives in Prague.
