Daniel Herman (born April 28, 1963 in Budweis ) is a laic Catholic priest and Czech politician . It is a member of the Christian Democratic Party Křesťanská a democická unie - Československá strana lidová (KDU-ČSL) and was Minister of Culture in the Bohuslav Sobotka government .

Life

Herman began studying at the theological faculty in Litoměřice in 1984 , and was ordained a priest in 1989. In 1990 the Bishop of Budweis and later Cardinal Miloslav Vlk made him his secretary. From 1996 to 2005 Herman was the speaker of the Czech Bishops' Conference . In 2007 he asked for his laicisation.

From 2010 to 2013 he was director of the Institute for Research into Totalitarian Regimes .

politics

In the House of Representatives election in the Czech Republic in 2013 , Hermann moved into the House of Representatives as the top candidate of the KDU-ČSL for the capital Prague . On January 29, 2014, he was appointed Minister of Culture.

At Whitsun 2016, Herman was the first Czech minister to take part in the Sudeten German Day , the meeting of the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft , in Nuremberg . In a speech given in German , he expressed his regret over the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans. The Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer, as patron of the event, called Herman's appearance “historic” and a “great moment in Bavarian-Czech relations”. Vojtěch Filip from the Communist Party KSČM asked Herman to resign because of the performance. In 2016, Herman was awarded the Art Prize for German-Czech Understanding . In 2017 he received the Bavarian award Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum .
