Sudeten German Day

The Sudeten German Day has been a meeting of the Sudeten Germans that has been held annually at Pentecost since 1950 and regularly attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

From 2000 to 2007 it took place alternately in Nuremberg and Augsburg , previously in other cities in southern Germany - the only venue north of Frankfurt am Main was Cologne in 1961 . Vienna was chosen as the venue outside of Germany three times , namely in 1959, 1977 and 1983. Around 300,000 visitors came there in 1959 and around 180,000 in 1977.

Essential components of the Sudeten German Day are the folk evening and the folk dance festival or the Bohemian village festival on Pentecost Saturday as well as the mass and main rally on Pentecost Sunday. Afterwards, meetings will take place in the exhibition halls according to home landscapes and home districts.

Public discussions repeatedly triggered the negative attitude of the plenary towards prominent guest speakers such as the then Bundestag Vice President Antje Vollmer .

For the first time took at Pentecost in 2016 a member of the Government of the Czech Republic at the Sudeten day part: Culture Minister Daniel Herman expressed in one on German speech delivered regret for the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from. The Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer, as patron of the event, called Herman's appearance “historic” and a “great moment in Bavarian-Czech relations”.
