Josef Tošovský

Josef Tošovský (born September 28, 1950 in Náchod ) is a Czech banker and politician.

Tošovský studied foreign trade at the University of Economics in Prague from 1968 to 1973 and then joined the Czechoslovak State Bank. In 1977 he did an internship in Great Britain and 1980 in France. From 1984 to 1985 he worked in the London branch of Živnostenská banka , in 1989 he became its deputy head. From 1976 to 1989 he was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia .

In December 1989 he was recalled to Prague and appointed President of the Czechoslovak State Bank. From January 20, 1993 he was governor of the Czech State Bank.

After the fall of the Klaus government on October 30, 1997, President Václav Havel commissioned him on December 17, 1997 to form a government. From January 2, 1998 to July 17, 1998 he headed a non-partisan government . On July 22, 1998 he took over the management of the Czech National Bank again .

Tošovský resigned from this position on November 30, 2000 and has since worked at the Institute for Financial Stability (FSI), a subdivision of the Bank for International Settlements based in Basel .

In 1994 he was elected European Manager of the Year and in 1995 European Banker of the Year .
