Vladimír Špidla [ ˈvladjimiːr ˈʃpidla ] (born April 22, 1951 in Prague ) is a Czech politician ( ČSSD ). From 2001 to 2004 he was chairman of the Social Democratic Party, from 2002 to 2004 Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and from 2004 to 2010 European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities .

Life

After studying and obtaining a doctorate in history and prehistory at the Charles University in Prague , he earned his living as a sawmill worker, archaeologist and set pusher, among other things. After the political change in 1989 he was deputy head of the district office in Jindřichův Hradec and from 1991 director of the local employment office. In 1989 he became politically active in the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD).

From 1996 he was a member of parliament, in 1997 he became deputy party chairman and from 1998 Minister of Labor in Miloš Zeman's cabinet . From April 2001 he succeeded him as chairman of the social democratic party. Since July 2002, Špidla was Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and headed a coalition government made up of Social Democrats, Christian Democrats and the Freedom Union . After his party's defeat in the European Parliament elections and internal party disputes, he resigned from his post on June 26, 2004; his successor was former Interior Minister Stanislav Gross .

Vladimír Špidla was from 2004 to 2010 EU - European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion in the Barroso I Commission .

In October 2010 Spidla ran in the elections for the Senate, the 2nd Chamber of Parliament. Despite the fact that the ČSSD did quite well overall, he was defeated by the ODS candidate in the Český Krumlov constituency in the runoff election .
