Jan Stráský (born December 24, 1940 in Pilsen ; † November 6, 2019 in Prague ) was a Czech politician . From July 2 to December 31, 1992, he was the last Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia .

Life

After studying philosophy and economics at Charles University in Prague , he worked for the Czechoslovak State Bank. In 1991 he became Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and was one of the founding members of the ODS . He was also its vice-chairman until 1997. After the Czechoslovak parliamentary elections in 1992, he formed the last federal government , which transferred its official duties to the republics in an orderly manner. As Prime Minister, after Václav Havel's resignation on July 20, 1992, he also exercised the powers of the President.

Since July 1992 Stráský was also Minister of Transport in the government of the Czech Republic of Václav Klaus . Since 1995 he has held the office of Minister of Health. In 1997 he left the government.

In January 1998 he left the ODS and joined the US-DEU Freedom Union . In the same year, however, he left active state politics. From 2001 to 2006 he was the director of the Regional Office of the South Bohemian Region . From 2006 to 2014 he was President of the Club českých turistů , from 2011 to 2012 Administrative Director of the Šumava National Park . In 2011 he received the negative Ropák roku award from the environmental organization Děti Země .
