Viliam Široký
Viliam Široký (born May 31, 1902 in Pressburg , † October 6, 1971 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak Communist Party (KPČ) politician .
Life
Široký was first Deputy Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia in the Klement Gottwald I government from 1946 and on March 14, 1950 Foreign Minister in the Antonín Zápotocký government . When he became President on March 21, 1953 , he succeeded him in the office of Prime Minister . When Zápotocký died on November 13, 1957, he was also the incumbent president from November 13 to 19, 1957 due to the constitution.
He was one of the pioneers and protagonists of the political show trials in the 1950s. During his tenure on July 11, 1960, the Czechoslovak Republic was renamed the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (Československá socialistická republika, ČSSR).
After ten years in office, he was replaced as Prime Minister on September 19, 1963 by Jozef Lenárt .
