Zdeněk Škromach

Zdeněk Škromach (born December 31, 1956 in Hodonín ) is a Czech social democratic politician and former vice-chairman of the ČSSD . From 2010 to 2016 he was a senator and deputy speaker of the Czech Senate .

Career

After an apprenticeship as an electrician, a technical diploma and then studying electrical engineering at the Technical University of Brno , Škromach first worked as an industrial foreman in his hometown of Hodonín . During this time (1982–1989) he was a member of the KSČ . In 1989 he was elected union chairman in the local company and joined ČSSD in 1995 , where he is part of the left wing of the party. In the 1996 parliamentary elections , Škromach was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time , to which he was a member until 2010. From 2000 to 2001 he was briefly group chairman of the social democratic parliamentary club. In 1997 he was elected vice-chairman of the ČSSD, an office which he held until November 2013 with brief interruptions. In 2005, after the resignation of Vladimír Špidla , he applied for the party chairmanship, although he was defeated by the acting chairman and incumbent Prime Minister Stanislav Gross . But Gross’s election led to the breakup of the government at the time .

After the relatively poor performance of the ČSSD in the 2013 parliamentary elections , Škromach, along with other ČSSD politicians close to Miloš Zeman , called for the first vice-chairman, Michal Hašek, to resign from party chairman Bohuslav Sobotka . After Sobotka received unexpected support in the party, however, Škromach made his vice-chairman post in the ČSSD available on November 7, 2013.

Minister for Labor and Social Affairs

After the parliamentary elections in 2002, he was appointed Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the coalition government headed by Vladimír Špidla . He kept this office in the 2004 government of Stanislav Gross , where he also took over the post of first deputy prime minister. After Gross' resignation, Škromach was again appointed Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Jiří Paroubek . After the Social Democrats were no longer involved in government after the 2006 parliamentary elections , Zdeněk Škromach also left the government.

In 2010 Škromach ran successfully for the Senate in the constituency of his hometown of Hodonín . He prevailed with 37.28% in the first ballot and 56.17% in the runoff election against the previous Senator Alena Venhodová from the ODS . After his election, Škromach took over the position of Vice President of the Senate. In the 2016 Senate election, Škromach lost to Anna Hubáčková from the KDU-ČSL in the runoff .

Private

Škromach is married and has two children. The family lives in the Rohatec municipality not far from the Moravian town of Hodonín .
