László Andor [ ˈlaːsloː ˈɒndor ] (born June 3, 1966 in Zalaegerszeg ) is a Hungarian economist and politician of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP). From 2010 to 2014 he was EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

Life

Andor studied at the Karl Marx University of Economics (today Corvinus University ) in Budapest. From there he was posted to George Washington University in Washington . In 1993 he obtained a master's degree from the University of Manchester . Today he is an associate professor at Corvinus University. He is a member of the board of directors of the economic department of the MSZP.

From 2005 to 2010 he was on the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development . Andor was also a member of the government's advisory staff under the post-communist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány (MSZP), who supported his candidacy for the EU Commission.

As EU Commissioner for Social Affairs and Employment, Andor called for an increase in wages in Germany in 2014, as workers have hardly benefited from the increase in productivity in recent years. At the beginning of 2014, Andor presented an EU directive which aims to take ecological and, above all, social requirements into account in public tenders and to create a clear European legal framework for this. In most EU Member States , only the pure cost aspect was often taken into account, which often happened at the expense of the employees. The new EU directive partially obliges the contracting authorities to include this aspect.
