Gilles Carle

Gilles Carle , OC , GOQ (born July 31, 1928 or 1929 in Maniwaki , † November 28, 2009 in Granby , Canada ) was a Canadian filmmaker . In his four-decade career, he has directed over thirty feature, short and documentary films and has also worked as a screenwriter.

Life

Carle attended the École des beaux-arts and later the École des arts graphiques in Montréal and studied literature and social sciences at the university there from 1950 . He also worked as a critic for various magazines. From 1950 to 1960 he was under contract with CBC / Radio-Canada , where he began researching and writing for films.

In 1961 he made his first film, a documentary about Italian emigrants in Montréal, Dimanche d'Amérique . After further short documentary strips , the feature film La vie heureuse de Léopold Z. was the start of a number of award-winning films. Carle worked for Productions Onyx from 1966 to 1971 until he founded his own company, Productions Carle-Lamy. In the last years of his life he suffered from Parkinson's disease .

Prices

Carle received his first film award in 1965 with the Grand Prix du Cinéma Canadien ; his last in 1989 with the Golden Palm for his short film 50 ans . In 2001 he was awarded the Canadian Prix ​​Jutra for his life's work .
