Cannes International Film Festival / Palme d'Or - Best Short Film
With the Golden Palm for the best short film ( Palme d'or du court métrage ), the best short film in the competition is awarded at the annual Cannes Film Festival . The name has existed since 1955, before the Palme d'Or, as from 1964 to 1974, was known as the “Grand Prix of the International Film Festival” ( Grand Prix du Festival International du Film or Grand Prix ). Like the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival or the Golden Bear of the Berlinale , the motif was taken from the city arms of Cannes . A specially convened short film jury, which is usually composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize, which is presented to the winner in the form of a certificate.
Award winners
The works of French directors (13 wins) were most frequently awarded the Golden Palm for the best short film, followed by their colleagues from Hungary (5) and the USA (4 each). The Frenchman Albert Lamorisse was twice successful (1953 and 1956). The only filmmaker to date to have won both the Palme d'Or for the best short film and the best feature film is New Zealander Jane Campion . She triumphed in 1986 with the nine-minute An Exercise in Discipline - Peel and in 1993 with the later Oscar- winning historical drama Das Piano .
Three times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winning film. In the past, short film directors from German-language films could not prevail against the competition from foreign filmmakers.
