Raoul Servais (born May 1, 1928 in Ostend , Belgium ) is a Belgian filmmaker who primarily devotes himself to animation films.

life and work

Raoul Servais studied applied arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in Ghent and experimented in the field of animation film as early as 1946. Nevertheless, he first worked as a painter and graphic artist when he devoted himself to film in the late 1950s. For his debut film, the ten-minute animated film Hafenlichter , which took about three years to produce, he developed new, almost experimental techniques. In further work he perfected his ideas and combined filming and animation, so that he finally developed his own animation process, "servaisgraphie".

Raoul Servais has received numerous awards for his work. In 2013 he received the Belgian Mira d'Or Lifetime Achievement Film Award .
