occupation

Moth is a Belgian animated short film directed by Paul Delvaux and Raoul Servais in 1997.

action

Shortly after midnight, a moth flies to a bright chandelier in a station waiting room. Here he flies to the baton of a toy conductor and thus sets the mechanical organ in motion. In the waiting room sit two motionless women with bared breasts that become mobile when the moth perches on a lady's nipple. Both women stand up and double as they look in a mirror. The now four women begin to dance to the music of the mechanical organ. The butterfly flies on and, among other things, starts a train. Shortly afterwards, he is caught by a man in his hat.

The man enters the room where the music has meanwhile stopped and the women are back in their seats. He is astonished, as one of the two women shows a shoe under her dress while the other holds a fan in her hand. The butterfly escapes from the man's hat and the man catches him like a frog with his tongue and impales him, since he's a butterfly collector. When impaling the butterfly, the conductor's baton falls from the conductor's hand and the two women return to their original sitting position. The camera leaves the scene and it turns out that it all took place in a painting on a wall showing the house behind a square at night. The dedication “P. Delvaux 1897–1994 “is displayed.

production

Nachtfalter pays homage to the surrealist Belgian painter Paul Delvaux , whose painting Petite place de gare from 1963 comes to life in the film. Other paintings that influenced the film were Trains de Nuit and Train du soir . The film is dedicated to Delvaux.

Servais animated the film with a process that he calls "Servaisgraphie". Real acting scenes are covered with animation. It is the only film by Servais that was completely realized as an elaborate Servaisgraphie.

Awards

In 1998 Nachtfalter won the Cristal d'Annecy of the Festival d'Animation Annecy as well as the FIPRESCI award of the festival. He also received the IGRIC Award at the 1998 Art Film Festival.
