Hieronim Malecki (also Hieronymus Maeletius, Jerome Meletius, Jerome Maletzki ; * 1525 /1526 Krakow , Poland ; † 1583 /1584 Elk in Mazury , Duchy of Prussia ) was a Prussian theology, printers and ducal Prussian translators and interpreters Polish and Russian.

Life

Hieronymus Maletius was a son of the theologian, printer and translator Johannes Maletius . He studied in Königsberg at the newly opened Albertina under Rector Georg Sabinus . From 1546 to 1552 he was rector (teacher) of the provincial school in Lyck and, like his father Johannes Maletius, was active as a printer. In 1547 he founded the particular school in Lyck. In 1547 he wrote to the Duke of Prussia that he had spent almost four years at the University of Konigsberg and consumed his money, now he was penniless, so he had left Konigsberg , went to Lyck and there began lessons with boys, the number of whom is increasing daily increased. In his letter he asked for an increase in salary, as the papal-minded people laughed at him because of his twelve marks, and for a free table at the castle. He offered to lead the Polish and "Ruthenian" correspondence for the governor. During the church visit of 1549/1550 by Bishop Paul Speratus , who was already a patron of his father, Maletius came to appreciate Maletius with the result that he was paid an additional thirty marks from church funds for his work.

At an unknown time, Maletius became deacon in Neidenburg . From 1552 to 1567 he was pastor in Pissanitzen . However, he was absent most of the time due to his services to the Duke. In the same year he was appointed Polish interpreter for Duke Albrecht of Prussia in Königsberg (named in 1563 as "Illustrissimi Principis Prussiae etc. interpres Polonicus") and was also active with various ducal commissions in Poland (Aug./Sept. 1555 participation in the Synod in Kozminek, where the three different Reformation confessions were disputed).

In 1558 he was named again as a teacher in Lyck ("ludi literarii Lyccensis moderator", the higher school was called in Latin "ludus literarius", a Latin trivial school), and was at the same time his father's assistant as a printer in Lyck. A letter from this year shows how father and son raised funds for their business; In 1558 they borrowed 40 marks from the parishes of Lyck, Lissowen and Ostrokollen to produce a Polish catechism ("pro edendis catechismis polonicis"). The paper required for this was procured in Gdansk, Jerome then received 500 copies and carried them to Posen at risk of death , but where he could not sell them publicly and therefore distributed the catechism as a gift to "Polish evangelical-minded greats". In his letter, in which he describes this, he asked the duke to remission of the 40 marks now owed to the parishes - which the duke referred him to the parishes themselves.

From 1565 to 1567 Maletius was pastor's assistant in Lyck with his father and after his death from 1567 to 1583 pastor in Lyck. In 1567 he signed the Repitio corporis doctrinae prutensiae as “pastor pisanicensis” as 77. Since August 16, 1578 he was archpriest in Lyck (introduction by Bishop Johannes Wigand). This gave him the supervision of the churches of the offices of Lyck, Johannisburg , Oletzko and half of the Rhine.

Maletius had several children.

Act

He continued his father's activity as a printer and writer and, like him, was an important translator of Lutheran writings into Polish. In 1574 he published his Postilla Domowa , written in Polish, Martin Luther's house postil , whose beautiful language is emphasized by Polish literary historians in Poland. Duke Albrecht of Prussia commissioned Maletius around 1567 to translate Luther's house postil, as the only previous translation was very incorrect.
