Samuel "Sam" Karmann (born September 23, 1953 in Port Said , Egypt ) is a French film and theater actor and film director.

Life

Karmann began studying medicine before deciding to become an actor. He attended the École de la rue Blanche of the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre in Paris, but broke off his acting studies after a short time. Karmann initially worked as a theater actor. In the 1970s he belonged to the theater group around Jean-Pierre Bouvier and played in plays by Alfred de Musset ( Lorenzaccio , 1976) and Molière ( Dom Juan , 1977) , among others . In the 1980s, Karmann was often seen in the theater under the direction of Roger Hanin . For his role as Jacques in the extremely successful piece Cuisine et dépendances by Agnès Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri , Karmann was nominated for a Molière as Best Supporting Actor in 1992 . In the 1993 film adaptation of the play, Karmann also took on the role of Jacques.

From 1980 Karmann was initially seen in small television roles. He made his cinema debut in 1982 in Alexandre Arcady's The Superboss ; Under Arcady's direction he also starred in the film Le grand carnaval the following year . During the filming of The Superboss , Karmann met Roger Hanin, with whom he - in addition to his collaboration at the theater - also worked several times in the film sector: Under Hanin's direction, Karmann played in Höllenzug (1985) and La rumba (1987). In the popular crime series Commissioner Navarro , in which Hanin played the main character of Commissioner Navarro, Karmann appeared in 35 episodes as Inspector Barrada. His long-standing role in the series meant that Karmann got to know various directors and their work, which ultimately led him to become active as a director himself. With Christian Rauth , who played Inspector René Auquelin in Commissioner Navarro , Karmann wrote the script for the short film Omnibus , which was released in 1992. The main role of the employee Martichoux, who threatens to be late for work due to a changed train schedule, took over Daniel Rialet , who had played the role of Inspector Joseph Blomet in Commissioner Navarro . Omnibus has received numerous film awards, including the Palme d'Or in Cannes in 1992 for best short film and an Oscar ( best short film ) and BAFTA ( best short film ) in 1993 .

In the following years, Karmann played mainly supporting roles and was seen as an actor in commercials. A first feature film as a director failed shortly after filming began due to funding. Seven years after Omnibus , Karmann finally published his first feature-length film as a director, Kennedy and me . The film is based on Jean-Paul Dubois ' novel Kennedy et moi and received, among other things, a nomination for a European Film Award . The feature films À la petite semaine (2003) and La vérité ou presque (2007) followed.
