A Breton love (original title: Ôtez-moi d'un doute ) is a French - Belgian comedy film directed by Carine Tardieu from 2017 with François Damiens and Cécile de France in the leading roles.

action

The widowed Erwan Gourmelon, who lives in Brittany, earns his living as an explosives clearer by tracking down and defusing bombs, hand grenades and anti-tank mines from the Second World War . When his daughter Juliette is pregnant, he has a genetic analysis carried out because of a hereditary disease in his family. It turns out that Erwan's father Bastien is not his biological father. But instead of looking for his real father, Erwan is more interested in who Juliette got pregnant with. She had a one-night stand at a costume party , was drunk and therefore did not know who the father of her child was. To find the father of his grandchild, Erwan turns to a private detective. When she instead tells him that she has found his father not far from his place of residence, Erwan, after initial hesitation, decides to take a closer look at this man named Joseph Levkine. He drives to his house and follows him and his dog Pinochet to a supermarket, where they talk to each other. Erwan takes Joseph over for coffee and tries to find out whether Joseph once knew his mother. However, the old man is annoyed when he realizes that Erwan believes he is his father.

On the way home in the evening Erwan meets a woman who has hit a wild boar and kills the injured animal with a syringe. The woman is Joseph's daughter Anna. She is a doctor and takes care of her ailing father. Joseph, who has come to the conclusion that he could once have cheated on his wife with Erwan's mother when he was drunk and that he is very likely to be Erwan's father, visits Erwan in his company. During a trip together, Joseph tells about his past as an activist and they get to know each other better. Erwan meets Anna again in Joseph's home and, despite her dismissive behavior, invites her to dinner. When she finds Erwan in her father's house shortly afterwards, Anna is confused. Erwan therefore goes into Joseph's white lie that he is visiting senior citizens living alone on behalf of the pensioners' association. At their dinner he asks Anna specifically about their father, which annoys Anna again. It is only when he explains his actual job to her on the beach and how mines work in the sand that Anna is increasingly impressed by Erwan. Erwan, who only sees her as her half-sister, firmly rejects her advances.

Using a Zorro mask, Erwan concludes that his simple-minded intern Didier must be the father of Juliette's child. This had only recently given the unemployed Didier an internship in her father's company. Erwan now offers Didier to contract him as an employee. But Didier feels overwhelmed. He doesn't want anything to do with a child and runs away. Bastien Gourmelon, whom Erwan thought was his father all his life, meanwhile visits Anna in her doctor's office - Erwan had told him about her. In order to be able to continue driving his boat, Bastien wants Anna to certify his health and fitness to drive. He also wants to couple her with Erwan and therefore invites her as a surprise guest on a trip for three. Together they drive to an island, where Anna confronts Erwan because of his renewed reserve towards her. Erwan, who in truth feels very drawn to Anna, kisses her stormily, but then confesses to her that he has the same father, which she later confirms to Joseph.

After Didier signaled to Juliette that he wanted to take responsibility for their child, a girl, Juliette and Erwan had an argument. Juliette had known all along who she was pregnant with, but would rather choose the father of her child herself. Because she believes that her father, with whom she lives, wants to get rid of her, she goes to Bastien, who finally reveals that he always knew he was not Erwan's biological father. When Didier wants to throw himself off a lifting platform in his Zorro costume , if Juliette doesn't want him to be the father of her daughter, Bastien learns that Erwan has already been looking for his real father. In the evening Juliette's amniotic sac bursts and she takes a taxi to the hospital alone because she can neither reach Erwan nor Bastien. Meanwhile, Erwan is at a fair with Joseph. There Joseph suffers a fit of weakness. He is admitted to the hospital, where he begins to doubt whether he is Erwan's father. He just couldn't remember his mother. When Bastien wants to visit Juliette in the hospital the next day, he sees Erwan with Joseph and informs Erwan about the birth of his grandchild. Together they visit Juliette and the baby. Didier, whom Juliette called to the hospital that night in her need, is also present and soon officially recognizes the girl as his daughter.

Back at his house, Joseph, who raised Anna by himself because her mother would rather take care of the suffering in Palestine than take care of her child, urges his daughter to spend less time with him and instead concentrate on her own life. Together with Erwan, Anna then undergoes a genetic test to find out whether they are actually related. When they receive the envelope with the result, Anna runs away with it. Erwan follows her to a hotel, where Anna, who has fallen in love with him, has reserved a room for herself and Erwan as a precautionary measure, should they not be brother and sister. The test result turns out to be negative. While Anna is visibly happy about it, Erwan looks confused. Anna runs away disappointed. Erwan follows her and carries her on one shoulder into a doorway, where they kiss passionately. Nothing stands in the way of a common future. Erwan also wants to continue to meet regularly with Joseph, who is not his father after all.

Reviews

According to Le Monde , the film in Cannes gave its section “a welcome note of lightness”. It is not very profound, but instead pursues the question of a person's origins with imagination. The actors, especially François Damiens, are "perfect". Le Figaro found that the main actor François Damiens did not have “the charm of a Hugh Grant ”, but that the film was still believable as a romantic comedy.

“Seldom has anyone told of the tragedies of human existence with so much wit and seriousness at the same time,” epd Film praised the director Carine Tardieu, who directed her film “[with] charming ease”. The cast of the "clever, artful comedy" was also successful. The fact that the chemistry of the two main actors - "Damiens as a good-natured, somewhat clumsy Erwan" and "de France as self-confident, scratchy and yet vulnerable Anna" - is right, despite their misunderstandings, "adds to the charm of the film". For the film service , on the other hand , Eine Bretonische Liebe was "a largely superficial tabloid comedy that only scores thanks to its charismatic actors". Cinema again saw in the film "[e] in poetic character drama about sons, fathers and the uncertainty of love", which weakens slightly towards the end, but which altogether makes up for "the sentimental charm of typically French comedies". The film is "[s] vigorous, pleasing and also a little wistful" and also offers "[beautiful] summer landscape impressions".

Variety spoke of an "intelligent ensemble comedy" that was "cleverly written and appealingly cast". François Damiens hits exactly the right note as the "stressed average man". Cécile de France is initially “a little too rough” in her game, but her performance gains “as much charm as her chemistry with her screen partner” as the film progresses. Guy Marchand and André Wilms are "excellent as two very different but equally sympathetic father figures". The production is "pleasantly implemented on all levels", from the "beautiful visual packaging" to the sometimes "amusing" selection of music. That the duet “Pa-pa-pa” from Mozart's Magic Flute can be heard overand over again, for example, only becomes apparent later in the plot.

Awards

At the film festival “Film by the Sea” in Vlissingen , the Netherlands , A Breton Love 2017 was awarded the audience award. François Damiens and Cécile de France were nominated for the Belgian Magritte Film Prize in 2018 in the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, but were subject to competition. Damiens also received a nomination for the Globe de Cristal.
