Building history

Based on a building inscription, the oldest part of the complex can be dated to 1174. This consists of four interconnected buildings, two small churches, a pillared hall and an adjoining but no longer preserved armory. Numerous Armenian inscriptions were found on the buildings and the khachkars in the immediate vicinity. Almost all Armenian inscriptions and khachkars in the monastery were destroyed during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict of 1989–1993 when the monastery was under Azerbaijani control.

The newer part of the monastery is only a few meters south of this old complex. In the center of it is a 17 × 11 m three-aisled basilica. Several other smaller buildings adjoin the west side of the basilica. Unlike the older part of the complex, the newer part had no building inscriptions. Due to the design, however, the complex can be dated to the 17th century. In the southwest of the monastery complex, a chapel from the 12th – 13th centuries closes. Century on. Several associated building ruins are also located in the south of the monastery. Another church from the 12th-13th centuries Century vaulted roof is located on the opposite side of the Tartar River, about 400 meters northwest of the monastery.
