Marcell Jankovics (born October 21, 1941 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian animator and film director who was also active as a book author and illustrator. He created the first Hungarian animated feature film.

Life

Marcell Jankovics was the son of the bank clerk Marcell Jankovics (* 1906, † 1970) and his wife Margit geb. Bartha (* 1906, † 1981). His grandfather was the well-known publicist and climber Marcell Jankovics the Elder .

After finishing school at the Pannonhalmi Bencés Gimnázium és Kollégium in Pannonhalma , Jankovics came to the Pannonia Filmstudio in 1960 , where he initially worked as a phase draftsman , then as an animator and from 1965 as a director. From 1963 he also made independent films , including Tendenciar (1967), Hídavatás (1969) and Mással beszélnek (1971). A first major directorial success, however, was the animated series Gustav , in which he also worked on the script, and the first season of which consisted of 64 episodes. A second season of the series was produced between 1976 and 1978. Jankovics was also active as a director for the series Adolars Fantastic Adventures and directed the series Magyar népmesék (1978–1995) about Hungarian folk tales.

Jankovics' 1973 wrote Hungarian film history with János vitéz : It was the first Hungarian animated feature film (around 77 minutes). Jankovics directed, wrote the script and was responsible for the design of the film. Two more long animation films - Fehérlófia (1980) and Ének a csodaszarvasról (2002) - followed. His short animation film Sisyphus was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1976 ; Küzdök (1977) won the Cannes Palme d'Or as best short film . His last project so far was the 160-minute animated film Az ember tragédiája based on Imre Madách's main work Die Tragödie des Menschen . Work on the film began in 1988 and didn't finish until 2011.

Jankovics is also active as a writer, illustrator and lecturer. From 1971 to 1972 he taught animation at the Képző- és Iparművészeti Szakközépiskola in Budapest and was active as a lecturer at the Moholy-Nagy University for handicrafts and design from 1981 . Jankovics has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 1994. From 1995 he was artistic director of Pannonia and from 1996 to 2007 managing director. From 1998 to 2002 and 2010 to 2011 he was President of the National Cultural Fund Committee.
