Pannonhalma [ ˈpɒnːonhɒlmɒ ] (until 1965 "Győrszentmárton"; German Martinsberg , Slovak Rábsky Svätý Martin ) is a Hungarian town in Győr-Moson-Sopron County (Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg) with almost 4,000 inhabitants. The Benedictine monastery of the same name , the Martinsberg Archabbey , which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, rises on the local Martinsberg .
In the vicinity of the monastery is one of the most prestigious boarding schools for boys in Hungary, the Pannonhalma Benedictine grammar school. Otto von Habsburg , first born son of Karl I and his wife, Empress Zita , was taught here for some time.
The place is about 20 km south of the provincial capital Győr , to which there are road connections and a railway line. 13 km to the north is a motorway connection to the M1 .
