The Winsor McCay Award is given annually to people who have distinguished themselves through excellent performance in the field of animation .

The award is part of the Annie Awards , which are presented by the department of the Association internationale du film d'animation (Asifa) in Hollywood . A two-thirds majority of the Asifa board of directors is required for the award . Appropriate proposals may be submitted, but the Board of Directors may also honor individuals who have not been proposed.

The award goes back to the idea of Jude Foray , who organized the first award ceremony in 1972. Since 1974 the award has been named after the animation pioneer Winsor McCay .
