Roy E. Disney (1990)

Roy Edward Disney (born January 10, 1930 in Los Angeles , California , † December 16, 2009 in Newport Beach , California) was the son of the co-founder of the Walt Disney Company , Roy Oliver Disney , and the nephew of the company's founder, Walt Disney .

Career

Roy E. Disney began working for the Walt Disney Company in 1954 as a collaborator in the editing of the True-Life Adventure films (films based on "real life"). In 1967 he was elected to the company's board of directors. In 1977 he left the board of directors after falling out with his colleagues. In 1984 he returned to the board of directors as vice director and headed the animation department. He set himself the goal of renewing the company's animation tradition and had great success by the end of the decade. The staff were grateful for the great artistic freedom he allowed them.

On October 16, 1998, he was surprised to receive the prestigious Disney Legends Award from CEO Michael D. Eisner at the newly opened Disney Legends Plaza .

Roy E. Disney's favorite project was the film Fantasia 2000 , a quasi-sequel to his uncle Walt Disney's 1940 film Fantasia , which the latter always had in mind, but never realized. Roy E. Disney was the executive producer of the sequel, which took nine years to develop and which premiered on December 17, 1999.

As the last family member of the group, he resigned from his position as Vice Director in November 2003. The then 73-year-old was previously expelled for reasons of age. In addition, there were differences with company boss ( CEO ) Michael Eisner. Disney criticized his management style, through which the company was perceived by the public as "greedy, soulless and always looking for the fast buck". He was the initiator of the "Save Disney" website, which criticized the Disney management, with the aim of ousting Eisner from the top of the group and renewing group policy. After the position of CEO was transferred to Robert A. Iger on October 1, 2005 , the website was shut down.

Roy E. Disney, who at an advanced age resembled his uncle Walt Disney strikingly both in appearance and in mentality, married Patricia Ann Dailey in 1955 and was the father of four children. In January 2007, his wife filed for divorce after 52 years, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason.

He was the last member of the Disney family to be actively involved in running the company. On December 16, 2009, at the age of 79, he died of gastric cancer .
