Bill Peet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bill Peet (born January 29, 1915 in Grandview, Indiana ; † May 11, 2002 in Studio City, California ; actually William Bartlett Peed ) was an illustrator and story writer for the Disney studios from 1937 to 1964 . In the English-speaking world in particular, he became known for his own children's books. For Walt Disney he worked - partly in the lead - on the cartoons Uncle Remus' Wonderland , Cinderella , 101 Dalmatians , The Witch and the Wizard, as well as on other films and stories. Bill Peet was married with two children, Bill and Stephen.

life and work

Until 1937, before joining Disney, Bill Peet worked for a greeting card company. In 1964, Peet left Disney. After Peet left Disney, he began writing children's books and illustrating by himself. His first book was Hubert's Hair-raising Adventure (1959). In 1988 he published his autobiography , which he also illustrated .

Bill Peet's children's books are lovingly illustrated and are characterized by their creative language. His hopeful stories, whose main characters are often animals, are well suited for children. Often the main characters try their hand at their endeavors successfully - despite initially having little hope of success - or do not let curmudgeon stop them from doing what they want to do or looking for compromises that make everyone happy. Often the stories have a surprising ending.

The language, although written in prose, is very lyrical. It is playful, but not level and, in case of doubt, is explained by the memorable and attractive images.

Bill Peet's children's books are particularly popular and widespread in the English-speaking world. He has received numerous awards, such as the Annie Award .

Peet is often in the same breath as the children's book authors Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak mentioned .
